Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT)

What is Cambridge TKT Certification?
Cambridge TKT is one of the most popular English teaching certifications awarded by Cambridge English, aimed at non-native beginner English language teachers. The course provides theoretical knowledge in teaching methodologies, classroom management, and lesson planning, equipping candidates with the skills needed to teach English.
A Modular Certification
The course consists of three compulsory Core Modules and two optional Specialists Modules , with certificates issued for each module.
Terminology Focused
It covers essential ELT terminology related to teaching methodologies, language awareness, and teaching practice.
Objective Exams
Candidates are assessed through an objective exam on each module. Candidates will be given a ‘Band’ denoting their performance.
TKT Core Modules
The Core Modules include Modules 1, 2, and 3. Indeed these are the main parts of the TKT test, and they check a teacher’s understanding of language teaching principles and practices, plus their skill in planning and managing language lessons. Therefore, passing these modules shows that teachers have a strong grasp of teaching principles and are ready to plan and manage effective lessons.

Known as the Module of ‘Background to Language Learning and Teaching’, Core Module 1 covers topics such as language learning, the role of context in language learning, and language skills and systems.
This is the Module of ‘Lesson Planning and Use of Resources for Language Teaching’. Core Module 2 focuses on lesson planning and teaching resources, and it covers topics such as lesson planning, selecting and adapting teaching materials.
This is the Module of ‘Managing the Teaching and Learning Process‘. Core Module 3 explores strategies for classroom management and also student engagement.

TKT Specialist Modules
The TKT Specialist Modules refer to CLIL and YL. CLIL is a test of knowledge of Content and Language Integrated Learning and concepts related to a CLIL approach. YL is a test of knowledge of teaching English to young learners. These Specialist Modules are optional modules, so take them only when required.

CLIL is a teaching method where subjects are taught in a non-native language. Learning this way can be tougher and more intense than regular language lessons. Students learn both the language and the subject at the same time, broadening their language skills and knowledge in various areas.
YL is a test for teachers and assistants teaching English to young learners. It examines understanding of young learners’ learning and development, as well as skills in planning, teaching, and assessing their work.
