TKT CLIL Module

The TKT CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) module is a specialized extension of the Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test designed for educators who deliver subject content through English. Ideal for both subject teachers working in an English-medium environment and ELT teachers integrating curriculum topics into their lessons, this module tests your core understanding of teaching subject concepts in an additional language. Rather than evaluating subject-specific expertise, practical classroom performance, or English language proficiency, TKT CLIL focuses specifically on the methodology and strategies needed to successfully combine content and language instruction.

TKT CLIL Module consists of 18 lessons categorized under four sections as follows:

  • Knowledge of CLIL and principles of CLIL
  • Lesson preparation
  • Lesson delivery
  • Assessment

Step 3

Keep studying!

Everything you need to master the TKT CLIL Module is right at your fingertips. Now, it’s time to start learning!

Success in the TKT CLIL Module isn’t just about memorizing ELT terminology, but more about understanding how those concepts work in an active English classroom. That’s why our free lessons, glossary guides, and coaching programs are designed to give you the practical edge you need to score a Band 4.

Master theory and terminology

The Cambridge TKT focuses on teaching you the core theory and vocabulary used in English Language Teaching (ELT). Instead of testing you live in a classroom, the exam checks how well you know teaching concepts, lesson planning, and language terms. Passing the TKT proves to schools around the world that you have a solid understanding of how modern language teaching works.

Do TKT CLIL practice tasks

Doing practice exercises at the end of every lesson is the best way to make sure you truly understand the material. These short tasks help move key ideas into your long-term memory while getting you comfortable with official exam question types. In our Exam-Prep and Comprehensive courses, students use these tasks after every topic to build confidence step by step.

Do timed mock tests

Practicing under real test conditions is the key to earning a top score on exam day. Taking timed, full-length practice tests helps you manage your time and stay calm under pressure. Instead of depending on old easy past papers, our course candidates practice with brand-new, realistic mock exams that match the exact difficulty of the real Cambridge test.

Step 4

Register for the TKT CLIL exam

If you follow a prep course at a language institute, they will usually take care of exam registration. The procedure may vary slightly from country to country and from center to center, but in general, it is similar to the one described below.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below, you’ll find answers to the most common questions about the Cambridge TKT qualification.

What is the Cambridge TKT?

The Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) is an internationally recognized qualification from Cambridge English. It assesses your knowledge of core communicative language teaching concepts, lesson planning, and classroom management.

There are no formal language prerequisites to register. However, an English proficiency level of B1 (Intermediate) or above on the CEFR scale is strongly recommended to ensure you can comfortably read and respond to the exam questions.

There are three. They go by the names Modules 1, 2, and 3.

To obtain the title of ‘TKT Qualified,’ you must complete all three core modules. Additionally, note that you need to achieve at least Band 3 in each module, which is the minimum requirement in ELT. So, yes, it is highly likely that you will need to become TKT qualified to secure employment.

Yes, there are no restrictions on that. In fact, most candidates complete their TKT Core Modules before starting the specialist modules. However, it is important to note that completing the specialist modules alone does not earn you the title of ‘TKT qualified’.

No. TKT is completely modular. You can take individual modules in any order or combination that fits your career goals and schedule. You receive a separate Cambridge certificate for every module you complete.

Certainly not. TKT is quite flexible, so you can start with whatever the Module(s) you are more comfortable with. There’s no particular order or a particular combination to be followed.

However, most candidates with no prior teaching experience would start with Module 1 as the lessons are logically sequenced for a much sensible grasp of the concepts. However, an experienced teacher might find it more beneficial to start with Modules 2 and 3

You can take any number of modules in a single sitting, whether it’s one, two, or all three modules. However, please note that attempting all three modules at once requires a significant amount of exam preparation. During the exam, it consumes a lot of energy and demands a higher level of concentration. For beginners, it is advisable to take one module at a time. However, experienced teachers may find it scalable to take all three tests in one sitting.

TKT certificates are evergreen, so you are not restricted to a particular time period for completing all three core modules. Unless the content for TKT modules undergoes significant changes, you are all set to present your five-year-old Module 1 certificate along with the certificates for Modules 2 and 3 that you received last month.

If you have chosen the self-study option, it will cost you only the exam fees. In addition to that, the exam fee varies from country to country, and there could be slight variations in the fee from center to center within the same country. However, at the end of the day, the self-study option will save you a considerable amount of money.

Each test consists of 80 questions, 1 hour and 20 minutes in duration, which are 3-option multiple choice and matching questions. Completing each module earns you a certificate with a ‘Band’.

There is no pass or fail in TKT. Results are reported on a Band 1 to Band 4 scale

A Band indicates your performance in the test. There are four Bands, ranging from Band 1 to Band 4, with Band 1 being the lowest and Band 4 the highest.

Here are the four Bands along with the number of correct answers required:

Band 4: 70 or more correct answers out of 80 questions
Band 3: 45-69 correct answers out of 80 questions
Band 2: 16-44 correct answers out of 80 questions
Band 1: 0-15 correct answers out of 80 questions

Although you are awarded a certificate regardless of the Band you have obtained, from an employability perspective, Band 3 is considered the minimum. Any Band lower than Band 3 carries very insignificant recognition.

The exam itself must be taken in person at an official, accredited Cambridge examination centre under secure conditions. However, all of your study and preparation can be completed online through our website and prep programs.

Results and physical certificates are generally processed and sent to your local exam centre within 4 to 6 weeks following your exam date.

No. Your Cambridge TKT qualification does not expire and remains valid for life.
